The Illuminated Word is a year long project that I am very excited to be a part of. Along with several other photographers, every month each of us will take a part of Scripture that speaks to us, reflect on it, and interpret it with an image. My post is just one of a blog circle, so please continue around the circle and take a look at what the other ladies have done (see link below).
“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind” ~ Rudyard Kipling It’s true, words have a tremendous impact on us. From large multi-syllable sentences to the smallest, simplest words… Love. Hope. Faith.
Proverbs is one of my favorite books in the Bible. Thought to be written largely by Solomon (over three thousand proverbs), much of it has to do with practical, everyday concerns. It is written for us to receive the instruction of the wisdom we need to live life the way God intended us to. Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. The dictionary defines wisdom as “the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement” and “the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of such experience, knowledge, and good judgement”. The Book of Proverbs is wisdom divinely inspired by God. Proverbs 4:5 Get wisdom, get understanding, do not forget my words or swerve from them. Wisdom regarding love, marriage, family, speech, money, work and more. Proverbs is undeniably the greatest “how-to follow God” book ever written.
Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. This is one Proverb I have been concentrating on with my girls. They play together so well, but every now and again, issues arise, and tempers start to flare, the conversation escalates, and then there is shouting and yelling out of anger. And at times I find myself yelling at them to stop. We are working on self control, of our bodies and our tongues. Proverbs 29:11 A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control. Anger fuels anger, like oxygen to a flame. Although we can not control temperature, harshness, or volume of the words of another, we can control our own. Proverbs 26:4 – Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself. It is amazing how much easier and faster problems are worked through when everyone remains calm. People are less likely to become angry if they are talked to in a quiet way. Proverbs 15:7 The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so. When we fill our hearts with the Word of God, so that we obtain His wisdom, so that we won’t speak foolishness, or harshly, but instead hold our words and speak wisely, we will also help the person we are speaking to.
Proverbs 4:18 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
